Connie’s Guide to Conifers

Within the past three decades, it has become increasingly clear that humankind is in the midst of an environmental crisis. Even so, ecological misinformation is repeatedly perpetuated by those whose power relies on the continued exploitation of marginalized people and the planet. In the face of blatant misinformation and deception, it is more important than ever to emphasize the importance of environmental education, especially for children. Some of our most significant childhood influences are literature, and as such, my senior capstone project has been focused on writing, illustrating, formating, and printing samples of an educational picture book about coniferous trees. The story follows a pinecone narrator through the ins and outs of how trees grow, what makes conifers unique, and what differentiates conifers from each other. Through thorough research, editing and outside review, I hope to have created an informative, accurate, and engaging piece of literature that can be used by both educators and parents as a teaching tool.
